Scrutineers play a crucial role in ensuring that participating vehicles adhere to the competition's technical regulations. They meticulously inspect safety features and assess various technical aspects of the cars, contributing to the overall safety and compliance of the event. If you are an engineering enthusiast, this is the team for you.

Electrical Scrutineer

Inspects the electrical systems of vehicles — battery, motor, controller, and wiring. Conducts high-voltage insulation tests to ensure every system meets the highest safety standards and delivers a detailed compliance report to the team.

Mechanical Scrutineer

Checks suspension, steering, brakes, chassis, and bodywork for compliance with technical regulations. May perform structural integrity tests such as the roll-hoop test, and issues a detailed report on any non-compliances before the vehicle is cleared to compete.

Scrutineering Activities & Stations

Both electrical and mechanical scrutineers collaborate across the following activities under the coordination of the Scrutineering Chief.

Vehicle Admission The first gate of scrutineering. Verifies driver wear and helmet compliance, checks vehicle identification markings, and supervises the egress test to ensure the driver can exit the vehicle within the required time.
Accumulator Verifies the high-voltage battery pack — housing integrity, mounting, isolation monitoring, and full compliance with the EV accumulator regulations before the vehicle can proceed to further electrical checks.
Electrical Verifies the complete electrical system: low-voltage safety circuits, shutdown circuit, and high-voltage drivetrain components. Conducts insulation resistance tests and confirms rule compliance throughout.
Mechanical Inspects all mechanical systems — suspension geometry, steering, braking system, chassis structure, and bodywork — for structural integrity and full compliance with the technical regulations.
Driverless Verifies the driverless system: sensor suite, actuation systems, emergency stop mechanisms, and all safety-critical functions required for autonomous vehicle operation in the DDT and FSG events.
Noise Test Measures engine noise levels to confirm they are within the permitted dB limit at the specified RPM. Also supports refuelling operations for combustion vehicles where required.
Rain Test Supervises the rain test, exposing the vehicle to water spray to verify that all electrical systems remain electrically safe and that no hazardous conditions arise under simulated wet conditions.
Tilt Test Supports the tilt table test to verify rollover protection structure (roll hoop) integrity and checks for any fluid leaks. Includes vehicle weighing to confirm minimum weight compliance.
Brake Test Verifies that the vehicle can lock all four wheels simultaneously under driver braking input, as required by the technical regulations, ensuring safe and effective brake performance.
EBS Test Verifies that the driverless vehicle's Emergency Braking System activates correctly and brings the vehicle to a safe stop within the required distance when triggered during the EBS manoeuvre.
Refuelling Supervises and supports the safe refuelling of combustion vehicles during competition days, ensuring compliance with fuel handling procedures, fire safety protocols, and the technical regulations.
Charging Oversees the charging of electric vehicle accumulator packs during the event, verifying that charging is performed safely, within allowed areas, and in accordance with the electrical regulations.
HV Working Area Monitors the designated High Voltage Working Area where teams are permitted to open and work on their accumulator packs. Ensures that all HV work is carried out by qualified personnel following the mandatory safety procedures, and that the area remains safe for everyone present.
Dynamic Inspections Before and after each dynamic discipline, scrutineers carry out quick targeted vehicle inspections. Each volunteer checks the points within their specialisation to ensure the vehicle is safe and compliant before it is released onto the track.
Parc Fermé Scrutineers verify that no unauthorised modifications have been made, conduct post-event compliance checks, and ensure the integrity of the competition results. A key responsibility during Endurance and the overall event classification.

As a scrutineer, you will be responsible for inspecting the technical aspects of each vehicle, including its design, construction, and safety features. This is a critical role — the safety of drivers and spectators depends on your ability to identify potential hazards and ensure every vehicle is compliant with the rules. Beyond safety, scrutineers foster a culture of continuous improvement by providing feedback and guidance to the competing teams.

A strong background in engineering, excellent attention to detail, and a commitment to safety are key. You should also be able to work effectively as part of a team and have a flexible schedule for attending the competition, training sessions, and preparation days.

Judges evaluate the static disciplines that are at the heart of Formula Student's educational mission. Their expertise and fair assessment help teams grow as engineers, entrepreneurs, and communicators. There are three distinct judge roles — choose the one that best matches your expertise.

Business Plan

Evaluates the business plans submitted by student teams, assessing financial viability, marketing strategies, and overall business acumen — providing insights into the practical aspects of bringing engineering designs to market.

Cost & Manufacturing

Examines cost reports, evaluating cost-effectiveness and budgeting of the student-built vehicles, ensuring teams are mindful of financial considerations in their design and manufacturing processes.

Engineering Design

Evaluates the ingenuity and innovation in the design of student-built vehicles. Involves a comprehensive assessment of creativity, functionality, and feasibility of the designs presented by participating teams.

As a judge, you will play a vital role in ensuring that competitors are evaluated fairly and that scores reflect the quality of their work. You will evaluate the static disciplines of one of the most prestigious engineering competitions in the world, bringing together the brightest young engineers from universities worldwide.

We are looking for judges who are passionate about engineering and innovation and who have a strong background in one or more of the static disciplines. We welcome judges of all levels of experience — including newcomers eager to learn alongside competitors. Diversity of experience and perspective is invaluable in judging.

Photography Cover all event areas — static, dynamic, paddock, and behind-the-scenes. Capture the defining images of every edition.

Staff

Staff members provide the backbone of the competition. They handle the logistical and operational tasks that keep everything running — from welcoming teams on arrival to making sure everyone is fed.

Roles within Staff

Event Control Answer questions from teams, sponsors, judges and volunteers. Support team registration & Ticket Center. Communication skills are key.
Event Support Help build the event infrastructure from scratch and join trackside during dynamic events. Hands-on, active, and varied every day.
Culina Keep all volunteers happy and healthy — help prepare delicious meals and refreshments throughout the event. A vital role that fuels the whole team.

Marshals are essential for maintaining the safety and orderliness of the competition. They manage trackside activities, coordinate with teams and officials, and respond promptly to any incidents during dynamic disciplines, contributing to the smooth and secure conduct of the races.

You will be at the heart of the action — trackside during acceleration, skidpad, autocross, and endurance. No two days are the same.
